Can You Crack This? That Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped our Modern Globe
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, building a simple trading ship required around ten sawyers working for three months,” notes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber could be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, that turned timber into boards with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, financial as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The Original Genuine Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends the writer, was “mankind’s first authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part converted the circular motion to vertical motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed the rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead a measured step each cycle.
“Every component was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to combine these parts so they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, cutting with each descending motion and moving with each return motion. It was a remarkably clever use of fundamental components.”
